Scootasad

"But why is it that this fandom must always use Scootaloo to represent all this childhood tragedy? What is it about her that seems to illicit all these depressing thoughts from us and make us use her as the vehicle to express them? Is it just because her personal life is so vague beyond her interactions with Sweetie and Apple Bloom? Just because we've never seen her parents doesn't mean she's an orphan. We've never seen Rarity's and Sweetie's parents before, yet we don't always assume they don't exist. We've never seen Applejack's or Rainbow Dash's, or Fluttershy's parents, and only Applejack's parents are obviously dead because she lives on a farm that's considered the center of her extended family.

Is it because Scootaloo is vulnerable to disappointment due to her idol worship of Rainbow Dash?

Some bronies love to hate Scootaloo, so we get Scootabuse. Others seem to feel like they need to deepen her character through drama and sadness in order to make her more appealing in a deeply emotional way, hence Scootasad.

I'm not saying that this isn't a deep and moving story that for a lot of bronies really hit close to home. I'm just asking...Why Scootaloo? Not for this story specifically, because in this instance it does make sense because she fit the requirements of the plot. And, in this instance she made the whole situation feel all the more real.

I'm saying this to every Scootasad story. Scootaloo has died tragically multiple times, and in one she had to choose her own afterlife, giving us possibly the most heart-wrenching, bittersweet ending in pony history. She's faced rejection and outright hatred from Rainbow Dash. She's been crippled and made unable to fly in her adulthood by either developmental complications from illness or a childhood injury.

The question I present to you is one which I hope shall produce some long, deep thought. Where does the Scootasad come from?"

I...have no idea how to answer that...I sure as hell can't answer now, my heart is too utterly broken by Scootasad comics. But I want to be able to answer this one day...One day...

Scootaloo, WHY YOU SO SAD???? *bursts into tears*

Wingboners

They're dumb. They make a funny joke, but they're certainly not canon. So stop acting like it is bronies. From what I can tell from the show, Pegasi raise their wings when they're uncomfortable, excited, or getting ready to fly. They also seem to use them for expressions, like shrugging. Wingboner doesn't make any sense.

MLP FIM Fan Theories

Probably the most fun thing about watching a series with characters you really love is coming up with theories about them. Naturally I have some about this series as well.

Fluttershy- An only child, her parents had high expectations of her. Both are pegasi, her father is a weather pony, and a good friend of Rainbow Dash's parents. Her mother was born with a defective wing, and was never able to fly. As a result, she's never left Cloudsdale, and is a very fragile pony, reclusive and distrustful of other ponies. She tends to push Fluttershy due to a desire for her experience all the things she never could. Fluttershy felt very pressured as a foal, and tried to please her parents, but when it came to flying, she just couldn't seem to catch up, which frustrated her a lot.

Rainbow Dash- The youngest of a big loud family. Was always teased and looked down on by older siblings, so she feels the need to prove that she's just as good as them. Overall, they have a nice friendly, albeit competitive relationship with one another.

Applejack- Went to a private school in Manehatten. Tried really hard to fit in, but she always felt out of place and like she was lying to everyone about her true self. Became good friends with a very unique pony, who is now a smale time actor in the world of theater. Played on the school polo team and made some friends there as well.

Pinkie Pie is bipolar.

And that's pretty much all I've got for now.

PMVs

So, pony music videos. I have been watching amvs since I was in middle school, and I have become very picky about them. First, I have to like the song. Not just like it, but be able to listen to it over and over. Second, it has to be well-edited, and I mean WELL-EDITED. And it has to make sense, and it can't spoil a series I haven't finished or started yet. Now that I'm mostly into ponies, I'm finding a disappointing lack of PMVs that suit my tastes. Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places, but I haven't found any PMVs that even come close to my favorite AMVs. Where are all the amazing PMVs at?

That being said, I still have favorited several PMVs, finding that I need to lower my expectations just a tad if I want to enjoy them. Also these PMVs are introducing me to some great music. I didn't even know Dream Theater wrote slow songs, and now that I've heard one, I'm totally in love. So beautiful. Possibly due to the nature of the show, a lot of the songs I've been introduced to are songs that I find very inspirational and uplifting. They actually make me happier watching them. Here's all my favorites:

Sad
Fluttershy-Far from Heaven
Applejack's Grief
This one's a bit too melodramatic at the end, but still sweet.

This is all that I'm not
Describes Fluttershy to a T
So awesome
Ponygazer

Didn't you know that love could shine this bright?
 Inspirational/Uplifting
Reach
Somewhere Only We Know

Life is Beautiful

Cool
 Linkin Park-No More Sorrow
It's funny, I'm not into Linkin Park, but I love this vid.

Fluttershy Island
Silly
Pinkie Party Pandemonium
Fan Animations
Present Prank
Fan Music
Fluttershys-20% Cooler version
I could listen to this song all day

Luna-Insomnia Mode
 This is just gorgeous.

Relaunch

Sorry, but this blog is being over taken by ponies until further notice. Because I fucking love My Little Pony.
I know I can talk about my little pony on my animation blog, but good lord there is so many things I want to say about it, and I don't want to overload the blog with just my little pony, that's just annoying. So I remembered that I had an extra blog lying around, with very little content and almost no followers, and then IDEA!!! All that annoying and embarrassing stuff that I want to talk about, and have no one to talk about it with? I can spill it all right here! How fun! So yes, I will talk about anything here. Anything I want. I'm just using this because I am bursting with stuff to say sometimes, and I NEED to talk about it. I would be extremely surprised if someone watched this blog, or god forbid, COMMENTED on it. Not expecting anything here. So enjoy the ponies I guess, and I'll pretend there's actually someone out there listening to me basically talk to myself.

Names

To me, one of the hardest things about writing is coming up with names. I rarely think of names first, and I'm not the kind of person who will just pull out the phonebook and name characters random names in the book. I have to think about them. A lot of my characters names tend to be extremely obscure references. For example:
  • the name of Jaden's closeted co-worker, Mel, is a reference to Mel Blanc, voice actor of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, et al.
  • Arthur Maltese, Todd's boyfriend, is a reference to one of the Looney Tunes script writers and to the voice actor of Elmer Fudd.
  • Alice Yamagishi, another one of Jaden's coworkers,  is a reference to Ryoko Yamagishi, who wrote one of the earliest yuri.
  • Terra Aelfdene is a reference to a Final Fantasy character
  • Joan Maloney is a reference to Joan Jett and Samantha Maloney
So on and so forth. For a science fiction story I have been writing, it's even harder to come up with names. I didn't want the characters to have names that actually exist, because it wouldn't make sense in context. But I didn't want to just string a bunch of useless syllables together and call it a name. I ended up taking words from various languages and turning them into names.

Defying Stereotypes

I am excruciatingly bored with walking stereotypes. Everytime I see a character who does nothing but be a stereotype, I am immediately turned off and lose interest. I cannot possibly see how anyone would find them entertaining or interesting. Naturally, this means that I will never write a character like that intentionally, unless I'm parodying that stereotype. I don't care if "there's some truth in every stereotype". I will not write them. I hate those characters.

It's possible of course to write character who suits a stereotype and have them be a well-written and interesting character.  I do not automatically hate every gay character who is flamboyant, or every female character who is weak and needy. It's a good opportunity to examine that stereotype and how it affects people and their perceptions of others, or how it affects those that are being stereotyped. People rarely do it right however.

Probably a good test to see whether or not your character is well-written is to see if you can sum up everything people need to know about that character in a single phrase. If you can, your character needs more work.

Introduction to the Series

Conventional Friends is a webcomic that I am and have been working on for several months now. It's the story of Jaden, his friends and family, the friends and family of those people, and holy crap, this series already has twenty-eight characters and I haven't even started it yet. *facepalm*

Originally, I hadn't meant to focus so much on Jaden, it just sort of happened that way. He became a very fascinating character, with several different layers and facets of his personality, who continues to surprise me. It's by no means ready for mass consumption, there's a lot of kinks in the characters that I need to work out, and in a series like this, where the characters are pretty much the only thing carrying the series, the characters absolutely have to be pretty damn well written. Personally, one of my biggest problems with the series at the moment is that I simply cannot seem to pull my attention away from Jaden. With TWENTY-SEVEN other characters, it would seem like he couldn't get a bunch of screentime, but he gets a lot of it.

My other problem with the series seems to be with tone. I keep flip-flopping between traditional comic strip humor and ultra-melodramatic and its making me crazy. I have problems with shows that do that (cough cough Black Butler) however, i see it a lot in webcomics, such as Questionable Content and Something Positive, so I'm wondering if the medium of comic strips is one that make that mood whiplash possible to do without looking utterly stupid
